Couldn't do it

Had a disappointing time this morning. I'm on week 5 mix 3 of c25k.  Was suppose to run 20 min without stopping and I couldn't do it.  I can't decide whether to continue repeating this particular mix or start this week over fresh with mix 1 and build back up to mix 3.  Mix 1(Tuesday) is a brisk 5 min warm up walk; 5 min jog; 3 min walk; 5 min jog; 3 min walk; 5 min jog.  Mix 2(Thursday) isa brisk 5 min warm up walk; 8 min jog; 5 min walk; 8 min jog.  Mix 3 is 5 min brisk warm up walk followed by 20 min jog- no walking.  Any thoughts or recommendations?

Traxee user firegirruns As I like to say " A bad run is better than a no run" If it makes you feel any better, I stopped for a total of 5 mins for walk breaks tonight. Legs felt heavy and I felt out of sync. But I powered threw and finished. I do feel better all around though. I like to agree with Beth, EVERYONE has a bad day. Whether your just starting out or Olympic quality, no one can "learn" from good days. Keep up the great work, keep a journal and power on! :)

Traxee user sbusse Even if it was ugly, like you said, you didn't walk- that's always a plus!

Traxee user bmoore It's OK. Sometimes it gets ugly. But you did it. Just listen to your body - don't push. There's a point at which you can get so frustrated you just give up. Don't let yourself go there. Running is one of those things that takes time for your body to acclimate to. Remember, we've ALL been there. Every last one of us.

Traxee user hockeymom3229 I did it. It was ugly at the end but I didn't walk. I feel like crap now. Going to bed. Thursday will be better.

Traxee user bmoore Oh, that sooo happens - especially when you are just entering the sport. Be kind to yourself, listen to your body. The fact is that you can go about a week of no running without losing your conditioning (don't take that as an invitation:-)...so don't go too hard on yourself if you need to step back and take it a bit easier.

Traxee user hockeymom3229 Thank you, ladies, for your words of wisdom. Beth, I just felt tired, no energy. I rode my bike last night and tonight listening to Mix 3. It doesn't seem so long now and I will do it tomorrow evening.

Traxee user bmoore It is very normal to have a really bad run - even for those of us who are pretty well trained. I am curious though - when you say you couldn't do it, tell me - did you feel very out of breathe, or legs heavy? It is hard I know not to get really disappointed with yourself, but this is only your body communicating to you that you're not quite ready to move on - for any number of reasons - which could include a "fear" of running the full 20 minutes without the walking respite. Emotionally, that can be a big leap. I would go back and try Mix 3 again BUT if you need to stop and walk, it's OK. For example, instead of doing the 20 minute jog, do 5 brisk walk, 15 minutes jog, 5 minutes walking... and then ease into the full 20 minutes no walking next workout. This won't mess up your training and might take some of the performance pressure off. And yes, keep up the good hydration work!

Traxee user LaurieB Evening Vs mornings and all the variables . I say try it again in the evening and see what happens

Traxee user hockeymom3229 I did go out first thing this morning and I've been running in the late evening. I suppose it could be hydration. I've had problems with that in the recent past but have done better making sure to have at least 32 oz throughout the day before heading out.

Traxee user sbusse Was this your first time stopping, or have you been struggling for awhile in the last couple of weeks? If you've been doing okay with this program thus far and this isn't a common problem you've been facing, I would stay on program and try again. The human body is complex and there are a lot of variables that affect a running workout on any given day, even if you don't feel that anything is different. It could have just been an off day. This happens often, sometimes one may even have an off week. good luck and let us know how you do.
