Newbie run/walker w/question

I just turned 50 and decided that now is the time to get my body in shape...a complete change in exercise, eating, everything!  I was encouraged to get a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day...however, I would like ti know how far I have run..one website said 10,000 steps was 5 miles, another said it 3 miles...I know if won't be totally accurate...but any suggestions?  Any suggestions for a training program for a total newbie like me would be appreciated also.  My goal is a 5K by August and possibly a half marathon in December.  Thanks for your help!

Traxee user redtayl Hi Denise! I'm new to Traxee and still fairly new to running. I'll be 49 in August, and NEVER ran in my life (well, since junior high for p.e.) until last November. I didn't know anything aobut couch to 5K plans, but I think that is a great way to go! I just started running one evening on my walk, and I could only run 1/2 a block. Then I added a little more running every couple of days, and in about 3 weeks it got so I was running about 1/2 mile! I was so excited that I overdid it, but long story short, I ran in the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot (5K), and was so frickin proud! If you have an iPhone, there's an app called Runmeter which will keep track of your distances and pace and all. It's a GPS too, but super cheap. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Traxee user bmoore Hi D! I've posted a really good training program for you in Traxee.com. I used a program like this one 20 years ago to get started and it really does work to prepare you for your first 5K AND gives you a great base upon which to build your ongoing training. Be patient with yourself and keep at it. I promise...it does get easier!

Traxee user bmoore Hi Denise! I really want to answer you but I have to run to class right now. Hang in there and I'll be back later this afternoon. You might also want to ask the Traxee community your question on Facebook. Just search for Traxee.com on Facebook to find us there. I'll be back...and thanks for joining us on Traxee!
