When it comes to running shoes, fit is king. Follow these rules to buy the perfect pair:
1) Choose the Right Store
Buy your running shoes from a store that specializes in running shoes. Hopefully, you are lucky enough to have a running specialty store within a reasonable distance. Why not buy from a large mega-sporting goods store? With few exceptions, such stores are not equipped to properly analyze your running style and fit a proper pair of shoes. Running specialty stores will ask the right questions, analyze your foot fall and gait and then recommend the proper style running shoe for you (motion-control, neutral, etc.)
2) Proper Fit is Key; Size Matters
Buying running shoes is not the same as buying those great pumps for your new outfit. Running shoes must fit perfectly from the minute you buy them - there is no such thing as "breaking in" a pair of running shoes. Again, a specialty store will take the time to measure your foot - length and width. Here's the part that many women have trouble with: size. In general, your perfect shoe fit is likely to be a full size larger than your street shoes.
3) Buy Functionality and Comfort, Not Brand
Shoe manufacturers are constantly tweaking their technology. Each manufacturers shoes have different features and functionality and the brand of shoe that's best for you has more to do with the manufacturers general approach to fit, cushioning, support, etc. If you followed rule #1, your sales associate is going to recommend a particular brand that best addresses your unique needs. For example, Nike shoes tend to run slimmer and may not be a good choice for a runner with a very wide foot. Despite the cool ads and the promise of increased speed, function and comfort are the deciding factors in making the right choice.
4) Take 'Em for a Test Drive
Many stores have a treadmill or track on which you can test your shoes. Don't take shortcuts here. Wear each style for several minutes and take a short run there at the store to assess the feel and fit of the shoe. Allowing yourself enough time to do this is essential. Any rubbing, tightness or discomfort? Put them in the "not for me" pile. NOTE: There are several stores that will allow you to return shoes within a specified period of time after purchase if they don't work for you. Don't hesitate to take advantage of this benefit if you need to.
Running in the right shoes can mean the difference between enjoying your runs and a world of hurt. Your shoes are your most important piece of equipment and can help prevent injury. Take it seriously!
