As The Mileage Increases, Numbness In Outer Thigh

As The Mileage Increases, Numbness In Outer Thigh by bmoore

This week I surpassed 20 miles - my highest mileage week since that ITB injury nearly one year ago.

I've been steadily increasing the length of my runs over the summer and I find that I can FINALLY run 6+ miles without any noticeable knee pain. Yay! Now, I'm really wanting to start some speed training in preparation for a Fall 5K in eight weeks, but something kind of weird is starting to happen.  I'm getting this strange numb sensation in my outer left thigh after running. I mean, the surface of my thigh is REALLY numb!

Now, I do have slight neuropathy in my left foot, so I know what that feels like. But there really isn't any pain associated with it...it's just numb!

After doing a little research on the web it sounds like it may be associated with the hip flexor muscle, so I'm going to try to do some stretching that targets this group...but I'm wondering - could I be compensating in some way for the old ITB injury with an imbalance in form elsewhere without even realizing it? Yikes! I know from my physical therapy that this can cause a re-injury.

Oh man- I just can't face another winter without running. Anybody have any advice?

Traxee user bmoore Wow! no, no fuel belt, but I do suffer from neuropathy in my foot on the same leg. Sometimes it is so wierd feeling - I could swear I have a bug crawling on my thgh. I'm going to do a littlel research on meralgia paresthetica and see what more I can find out. Thanks for the lead!

Traxee user Bahamarunner Are you running with a fuel belt or anything else that is tight around your waist? You could have meralgia paresthetica, which is the medical name for lateral femoral cutaneous nerve palsy (neuropathy).
