First, I have to apologize to all my friends at Traxee for being so long absent from positing.
To say the least, I have had a very challenging time the last month or so.
Some time around April 10th, my computer began a long, slow descent into “crash-ville.” After a scary several weeks of being unable to perform the simplest of tasks, (including backing up my system) I checked my “baby” into the Genius Bar, where a 4-day stay turned into a 3-week ordeal. It seems that super-fast hard drive I dropped into my Mac isn’t exactly standard equipment.
My precious MacBook finally emerged with a new hard drive…and upon connecting to the Internet, I received a “gift” of approximately 4,000 emails. I am still ferreting through this mess so if I have missed anyone’s email messages, please forgive me. I will get to you just as soon as I can.
Being without my computer and access to email (except when I could steal a few minutes on my husband’s business computer) definitely made me realize how dependent I am on this little machine. I run my entire business on it. I track my running on it. I have all my clients’ work on it, and I communicate with the outside world primarily on it. It was like…well…having a limb cut off as they say.
Now, if you consider yourself a member of the Baby Boom generation, you can easily remember a time before the personal computer. Hell, I can remember a world before cell phones! And while I sometimes find myself reminiscing about a simpler, quieter time before the machines stole all our down-time, I can tell you right now that I wouldn’t go back to that time for anything. In short, I am addicted to my computer.
In the middle of all the ensuing chaos with clients and my social networking connections, I had a wonderful opportunity to shoot a morning show on finding gear deals online with Lori Corbin at our ABC affiliate here in Los Angeles. It seems that the folks at Shop It To Me read a little pitch I wrote about them in Traxee several months ago and they put me in touch with Lori. BTW, if you haven’t checked out Shop It To Me, you really should.
It has been a number of years since I got in front of the camera and it was a really wonderful experience due to Lori’s sense of humor (and her wonderful camera man). It was really fun to talk about my passion for fitness and running with her (Lori is a former runner herself) and of course, to talk about my love for all things sportif in the gear category. I’ll probably cringe when I see this thing air, but what the heck – I had a good time.
Anyway, back to the computer thing. My ordeal is pretty much over. I still have not restored all of the applications I lost, not have I completely caught up on all my work, but the worst of it is definitely behind me. Now, there is only the email to tackle and I feel confident that I’ll have that under control by next week.
One thing is for sure. I really missed talking to everyone on Traxee and I am looking forward to getting back into the regular swing of things once again. Yay!
Oh, and a word of warning. Back your computer up regularly. You may even want to duplicate your back up to one of the “cloud” apps that are available for that purpose. My backup failed (this was the first indication that something was terribly wrong with my machine). Otherwise, you might end up missing a limb!
