A real milestone on Saturday with the San Francisco Marathon. training team..we ran 10 miles. I have to admit that this was the one that scared me...kinda like when I turned 30.
Other than an ill fated half-marathon about 10 years ago, I have never run more than 9 miles at a time, so I approached Saturday's run with some trepidation. Could I really do it? I have a good base, but this was kind of a test for me.
I used my regular strategy - start out slow and pace yourself. I found the rest of my group way ahead of me the first 4 miles or so and our "DD" was a little bit annoyed. But then, lo and behold, my faster fellows started tiring and I found myself in the lead virtually the entire remaining 6 miles. I have to admit, I feel a bit self-satisfied and I think this "start slow" strategy could really work for me as we continue to increase our distance.
The other interesting thing is that all of a sudden, everybody is having knee pain. At least three other team mates were really compaining by the time we finished. The unfortunate thing is that my news Asics seemed to have only a minimal effect on my calf pain. It was a little better, but not much. The pain dissipates very quickly so I don't think it's a severe injury. It's gotta have something to do with my form...but I just don't know what.
I'm going to review my stretching exercises and see if I can alleviate some of this by stretching daily - even on non-running days. If anyone has any insight - I'd love to hear it.
Well, time to rest! TTFN!
