You should have seen all of us women training for the San Francisco Marathon struggling with those waist-pack hydration bottles. The biggest complaint was that the hydration packs bounced up and down while we were moving. Not only was the movement really distracting, but it set a lot of us off-balance, and that can lead to problems with proper form and potential injury. I’ll never forget one of the women in my pace group saying “You know – someone needs to invent a better solution for carrying liquids while you’re running. This really is annoying!”
Well, I’ve found the solution and of course, a woman entrepreneur who suffered from dehydration herself while running invented it.
Julie Austin is president and founder of HydroSport USA and the inventor of Swiggies– the wrist water bottle that makes it easy to carry fluids while on the move.
In creating Swiggies, Austin cleverly borrowed her wrist strap material from the medical industry to ensure a secure stay-put fit and manufactures the Swiggies bottles from the safest non-BPA plastic. Swiggies carry a total of 11 oz of liquid and are equipped with an easy to open “sport top” style cap so when you need a swig, there’s no hassle. When filled, each weighs half a pound; the perfect weight for avoiding joint stress. Oh, and listen up all you soccer-softball-field hockey moms…Swiggies also come in children’s sizes!
Australian Ultra-Marathon Winner Wayne Gregory has endorsed Swiggies, having used them in the last leg of his winning event. Gregory actually froze the Swiggies and cleverly used them as a cooling device as well as a convenient hydration method during his race.
There’s been lectures-a-plenty here on Traxee about staying hydrated, so I don’t need to tell anyone what a boon this is to our sport.
As for Julie Austin, the success of the Swiggies line has merely wet her inventor’s appetite. She’s already at work on an all-natural, sugar free (yeah!) electrolyte sports drink that has been used in many races in Los Angeles and by the EMTs. I am definitely going to be watching for that one!
