I have been chatting online with lots of new runners lately.
Maybe because I am injured and off the road right now, I am seeking (and getting) inspiration from women who are struggling with their first few miles, a desire to change, lose some weight and in general, improve their lives.
I have always loved talking with new women runners for a lot of reasons, but mostly because I really get a kick out of women’s reactions to themselves when they first realize what their bodies can do. Most of us knew this when we were 11, but in adolescence and early adulthood we somehow forget what it feels like to fly and feel the joy in our own strength, power and endurance.
But I guess the thing I love about new runners is the fact that they are just so darn happy to be going down the road. They don’t really worry about how fast they’re moving, or freaking out about missing a training day on their goal to run Boston. It’s so refreshing.
Particularly courageous are the women who are looking to drop 70-100 pounds, start running and realize just how much they love it. The weight just flies off of them and they are so amazed…but in the end, it’s not the weight loss that keeps them going, it’s the increasing feeling of strength and power that comes from realizing that your body can do amazing things if you put your mind to it. Running transforms women!
“I will be 55 in two weeks and have been running for 2 and 1/2 months. I have already lost 49 1/2 pounds and have 70 more to go. When I started running it started coming off fast. I have been doing 3 mile walk runs and 6 mile walk runs and last Saturday decided to enter my first 5k race. My best time for my 3 miles had been 39 minutes so I knew I wouldn't be last. So I did it and let me tell you I had a ball. There was about 300 runners in the 5K and 10K race. I finished in 42 minutes, not my best but still good. And then much to my surprise and delight when the medals were handed out I took 1st Place in the 50 to 54 age group. All I could do was cry. I did it. So needless to say I am hooked. Started training today for 1/2 marathon in March.”
Yes, running transforms women (any anyone) who chooses to engage.
I can’t wait to get healed and back to my workouts! I could use a little transformation right now!
