HOPE Obama

HOPE Obama by Betty

I have heard BMoore express this before, and I am sure there are plenty of other people that suddenly realize something may be worth looking into after being repeatedly ‘hit ‘ over the head with it. On that note, as I sat reading the NY Times (article on increase of black women voters)this morning at the corner Starbucks I was reminded of an Obama opinion I heard the other day on my weekly radio talk show (I think that means I am getting old). Immediately I pulled out my Moleskine and jotted down the general idea according to memory and debated over whether or not this would be something to write about on Traxee.

I closed my book and left it at that, read a few more articles and headed to the car. As I hopped in I noticed the Obama HOPE sticker on the car in front of me and thought, “wow, that is so cool, I have been seeing these a lot lately.” Then, with a turn of the ignition my morning show, Uprising (on KPFK 90.7 here in LA) popped on and the minute spent before a commercial break was the exact reiteration of the Obama opinion that was plaguing me!

I had, at the moment decided, that yes, this topic is more than appropriate for Traxee, for women runners and women's running, for intelligent conversation. And then what do you know, BMoore had posted up Obama rhetoric. So, here it is guys (ladies), in my own words…the most intelligent thing I have heard in this whole presidential election business.

“We, as a country, could fail if we vote in Obama with abandoned HOPE. We can not proceed as we have in life and practice up until this point. The only way Obama can meet and exceed our expectations is if he is backed by a supportive country, a country that understands the sacrifice to succeed. Obama can not be left to fix the United States alone, he would surely fail and wouldn’t we naturally blame him for this? Yes, of course, that is our nature. With that in mind, I propose this to you; vote for HOPE (democrat or republican) and do everything in your power to make sure HOPE turns into SUCCESS. Success happens through sacrifice. Look at your personal debt and figure out how you will take action, starting today, to make sure it does not grow. Take a good look at how you spend your free time and make wiser choices. SAVE MONEY, don’t spend it. Make healthy lifestyle changes, improve your diet, get (stay) active. Become a pillar of your community. Your community is your mini country. Do not fear your neighbor because of the color of his skin or condemn him for his religious practices. Educate yourself on what is going on in the world, not just your office space, family, and circle of friends. READ. Pay attention to your children, not with toys and tv, but really invest in their future. These are sacrifices. Change for a country cannot be left to one man. It is up to every single one of us to make this change. LET US BRING BACK AMERICA.”

Traxee user bmoore This is an excellent point of discussion in my opinion. Here's what all this has to do with running. Ours is fundamentally an individual sport. It is true that in it's various forms, runners join together on teams to compete - but at it's most basic, running is a solitary activity. It takes courage and guts and discipline and dedication and yes, faith. Running distance is a learning process...for your body and your mind - it's the ultimate sport of "personal responsibility." I do not believe Barack Obama - or any other candidate for that matter can"save" America. Just as in an alcoholic family, we can continue to enable each other to live with our heads in the sand, to resist the change that must inevitably come, or we can make the personal decision - each and every one of us - to heal and to change. As you said, to make the necessary lifestyle changes. This also takes discipline (something that instant-gratification, morbidly (and morally) obese Americans seem to have lost. But don't count us out yet. You can't get fit sitting on the sofa and you can't sit on the sofa and expect democracy to happen. Again, democracy is a participatory process, not a static objectification of false ideals and sound bytes. "What can I do, what can I do?" I hear everyone wail. "I'm just trying to earn a living and make my car payment." Here's what you can do: speak your mind and don't be afraid. Don't be afraid of your government (they should be 'afraid' of us) and don't be afraid of your neighbor. Don't be afraid to go the distance. You can do it. We all can. And let us stop looking for our answers in heros and idols. This is the fundamental message from this presidential candidate. It's the 21st century version of "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." It is up to US, not Obama or Biden, or Palin or McCain or any of them to create the great society. It's so much easier to say, I'll run tomorrow, I'll get started next week, someday I really should...this is the time. And don't stop at the voting booth next Tuesday. Remember, it's just one foot in front of the other. And after a while you'll find it starts to feel good.

Traxee user Betty It is true, we do promote one canidate over another, but I thought this was too good of a view to pass up and it really can be used toward either party. WE, as a country, must change so that who ever we have in office is supported, for right and just decisions of course, of which can be hard to 'see' sometimes. Best Wishes all.
