I felt it, that extra charge like well boosted rocket fuel, the forward propulsion of music beats per minute blasting through well-stationed ear buds. Understanding the iPod generation all became clear, in fact, once again music introduced me to something new, motivation.
A recent study on the motivational qualities of music in sport and exercise, pieced from a 20-year program of work now awaiting publication in the U.S. periodical Journal of Sport & exercise Psychology, reinforces the above related endurance inducing effects of my new iPod. The study showed that music can enhance endurance by 15% and improve the ‘feeling states’ of exercisers (sic).
Dr Karageorghis of Brunel University’s School of Sport and Education explains: “The synchronous application of music resulted in much higher endurance while the motivational qualities of the music impacted significantly on the interpretation of fatigue symptoms right up to the point of voluntary exhaustion”. Dr Karageorghis feels these findings are particularly noteworthy for public health practitioners as it is under their instruction that running and walking are implemented in rehabilitation programmes.
*In fact, as many of you may alreay know, playlists for specific runs or workouts can be purchased from Nike on iTunes.
I can testify to the studies validity, hell Apple and Nike are banking on it!
