I Was Chased By A Coyote This Morning!

Wow, what a run I had this morning!  I was coming up over my first hill when I saw him - a lone male coyote just standing there staring at me!  I cut him a wide berth on the right (no need to let a coyote slow my pace, right?)  He let me cut around him and then decided that he'd give chase!  Thank God I have been doing my speedwork lately...with a mad dash of adreniline I pushed myself up and over the hill and looked back.  There he was, standing there looking at me with a somewhat vexed expression on his face.  Maybe he though I was a REALLY big rabbbit (hey, we both run, right)?

Actually, I should have realized that more coyote sitings were possible.  Spring is definitely coming to So Cal (the orange blossoms are in bloom and fragrant as ever!) and that means rabbits!  And rabbits always mean coyotes in this neck of the woods.

I usually see them in packs, but this young male was definitely on his own...maybe he'll run with me again, who knows?  This morning's run definitely added a new meaning to the expression "women who run with the wolves!"  I love this sport!

Traxee user bmoore Oh wow, Thanks for telling me. It's very likely that I'll see this guy again if he's a lone male...

Traxee user Roadrunner Congrats on outrunning the coyote! The California Department of Fish & Game advises that if you see a coyote, make loud sounds and throw rocks! However, do not try this with bears...if you see a bear, you should be silent, stay calm (yah, right) and back away very slowly...or even stand still. They can run as fast as a racehorse, even uphill, so don't try to outrun them! Good luck with your animal friends!

Traxee user bmoore I have about 5 routes in my neighborhood that I run regularly. Where I live it was open, rolling meadow for many years. They started building mc-mansions all over the place and all of our wildlife started disappearing. I don't know why, but I'm not afraid. I guess I always think that most wild animals are more scared of me than I am of them. OK. bears maybe...I'm afraid of bears. LOL ;-)
