Today’s 10K training run didn’t quite go as expected. An unplanned Saturday night of debauchery with my husband, a dear friend and an incredible bottle of port resulted in my crawling into bed at a time when I am normally just getting up to run.
I ended up getting out on my chosen course at 11:45 or so—way too late. The sun was already high and the air temp was around 95 degrees. WAY too hot to expect any kind of a decent performance.
My Higdon schedule called for a 10K race today, but having been too crazy busy these last couple of weeks, I failed to locate a race in my area. I decided to map a flat10K course and run it at a tempo pace, measure my splits and evaluate.
Everything started just fine, but as the heat increased, I found myself feeling dehydrated and low on energy. Nonetheless, my performance wasn’t too bad. The knee felt good (having dutifully done my IT band stretches), and I ended up finishing in 1:01:29…about a 9:50 pace. It sucks, but it could have been worse considering how I felt the night before.
Teaches me. The kid’s not 21 anymore! Nonetheless, it was good to totally unwind last night and go a little crazy.
The course is a loop, about 7/10 of a mile long, so I needed to run the loop about 91/4 times. Here are my basic split times:
6.47, 13.10, 19.22, 26.19, 32.53, 39.41, 46.44, 53.26, 54.05 (water break), 1.01.29. Yuck! Oh, well, tomorrow starts a new week. I must repent my sins!
