Have Disconnect Anxiety?

Have Disconnect Anxiety? by Betty

I hoped someone out there was working on naming that gut-twisting feeling I get when attempting to embrace nature by taking a mini camping vay-cay.  Only to be unceasingly torchered by this inner city-girl voice “I wonder if Dolly got my text?” “Why can’t I get a signal out here!” It begins to set in, “I feel so lost on this trail, if only I could GPS a way out!” Ok, you are right, that’s not me, but it might be you!

Solutions Research Group interviewed approximately 5,000 Americans aged 12 and older “on all aspects of their use and attitudes towards communications and entertainment technologies.” Which tells us…what exactly? Leads me to question the validity of their findings, but that is not why we are here today. The whole idea that this Disconnect Anxiety exists is just too freakin hilarious to not bag on. In fact, their description of the dis-ease is “The American Consumer is more connected and has more instant access to people and information than at any time in history. Losing that access creates disconnect anxiety.”

You really must read the full article to appreciate their thorough investigation on the subject; complete with colourful tables and modern clip art! One of my favourite pictorials displays words people use to describe their experience when disconnected: “half a voice” “loss of freedom” “empty.” If you find yourself overwhelmingly connected to one or more of these symptoms…you should probably go lock yourself in a closet and cry, as the Solutions Research Group provided no uhh…solution. However, if you are lucky, while in bed watching tv, working on your computer, listening to your ipod, texting, and playing your psp, there may appear (on any one of these devices) a commercial advertising a little blue pill for said disorder. You might bet on that.

I thought with all of the buzz around the new iPhone and all the crazy stuff that is taking up precious room in my not so giant handbag, you might like this little slice.

How important is your cell phone, iPod as a woman runner?

Traxee user KDface In the middle. I can love using it and forget and leave it at home for the day...miss a few calls and be ok. Sounds like, however, quite a few people that I know.

Traxee user Sarah People complain about not being able to get a hold of me. My phone lives wherever my cordless phone went to...under a wet pool towel or behind the sofa. I do know people that are completely lost without their devices. I just do not get the blue-tooth ear pieces...I never know if they are talking to me or not!

Traxee user Karen Well, I could say, to a degree, this is me. The only time I don't have my phone which is a little computer that connects me to the world, is when I am running or exercising....and guess what pops in my head sometimes? I get caught up in what I might be missing out on. The iPod helps, in a way, by distracting the mind to focus..ha. that sounds weird

Traxee user moofieruns I think it's all a distraction that keeps people from noticing what's really going on in their own lives. Mind numbing.
