Women Longboarding Gains in Popularity

Women Longboarding Gains in Popularity by Betty

Finally, a mainstream blurb on women/girl skateboarding!!  While girls on boards is far from new Label Networks, a youth market study group, is reporting an increase in female skateboarders, specifically longboarding.  Longboards are longer, obviously, than the regular board providing a more stable roll sought after by both genders all the way from pre-teen to baby boomers.  Longboarding and shortboarding have been and continue to be used as cross-training for snowboarders and surfers alike.  The papers report some 750,000 longboarders in the U.S. alone this year.

As you may have noticed, when cross-training our running with swimming, cycling and the like…different muscle groups are used in creating the optimal machine you see standing before you in the ‘long’-mirror.  In saying that, I am telling you to steal your neighbor kids board and try it on for size…or you could go to your local skate shop and try one there.  I speak from experience on this one. Just last year, late twenties, I picked up boarding as a hobby which has turned into a green means of transportation whenever I need it, not to mention a great lower body workout. Oh, and it is totally fun!  Yes, I have fallen…even in front of people, and it was embarrassing, but people are constantly stopping me and saying WOW…that is so cool…especially riding along side of my 5 year-old on his board.

It just feels good to try something new.

*Post Script – I just travel, I haven’t tried any tricks ☹

Traxee user Betty Ok, you can hang up your wheels...cause in-line skating IS HARD. But, B...you have to let me show you how to board...way easier!!

Traxee user bmoore Dude! My secret desire has always been to learn how to surf! I am totally uncoordinated on a board (admission). The last time I was on my in-line skates I shaved about 10 inches of skin off my right shoulder. I hung up my wheels. More power to ya!

Traxee user Sarah Thats funny, I took my daughter to the beach over the weekend...we saw lots of girl longboarders, and now she is asking for one. Hmm maybe we could both get one...but she may not be so willing to ride along side of her mum!

Traxee user Karen Oh yeah, that is really hot around the southern parts of Cali...I have a few girlfriends that ride, maybe I will try?! I snowboard...why not. That has to be even easier than riding your bike somewhere...you don't have to lock it up...you just tuck it under your arm...haha
