Finally, a mainstream blurb on women/girl skateboarding!! While girls on boards is far from new Label Networks, a youth market study group, is reporting an increase in female skateboarders, specifically longboarding. Longboards are longer, obviously, than the regular board providing a more stable roll sought after by both genders all the way from pre-teen to baby boomers. Longboarding and shortboarding have been and continue to be used as cross-training for snowboarders and surfers alike. The papers report some 750,000 longboarders in the U.S. alone this year.
As you may have noticed, when cross-training our running with swimming, cycling and the like…different muscle groups are used in creating the optimal machine you see standing before you in the ‘long’-mirror. In saying that, I am telling you to steal your neighbor kids board and try it on for size…or you could go to your local skate shop and try one there. I speak from experience on this one. Just last year, late twenties, I picked up boarding as a hobby which has turned into a green means of transportation whenever I need it, not to mention a great lower body workout. Oh, and it is totally fun! Yes, I have fallen…even in front of people, and it was embarrassing, but people are constantly stopping me and saying WOW…that is so cool…especially riding along side of my 5 year-old on his board.
It just feels good to try something new.
*Post Script – I just travel, I haven’t tried any tricks ☹
