Revisiting B.Moore’s post, ‘Running Hills Will Make You Faster,’ the other day inspired me to try a new outdoor spot. Being my weekend with the kids, I knew the pace would be slow, but the added company would provide a perfect way to encounter new space. I strapped the kiddos with their kid-fit CamelPaks and off we went to Fryman Canyon just at sunset. What an incredible trek! The main trail, of which we followed, is approximately 3 miles and although the lot of us were thoroughly impressed and fulfilled, it just made me itch for more.
So, needless to say, I went again last night…was going to go by myself, but by the time I made it home from work the sun had long set. While not afraid of the dark, I felt it would be best to be accompanied and thus picked a friend up on my way…the kind of friend that digs this stuff.
This time Fryman begged me to push the limits and so it was that we ran the entire length and to switch it up I would run backward every 5 or 10 minutes for 5 minutes. I AM IN LOVE! Not only in love with hill running, I am going again tonight by the way, but fascinated by the addiction of being challenged.
If you are typically a roadrunner, I highly suggest throwing in some hill running, not only does it make you faster/stronger, but it’s a whole new game to win. I’ll try to put together a local list of hill runs and if you know/love some please reply your suggestions. See you on the trail!
