The wrong shoes or socks?

Hi Traxee Community,

I am new to the running community and have started training for the SF Marathon with the National AIDS Marathon Training Program. I recently purchased new running shoes and socks.  I've only been training for a few weeks but have noticed that I get tender spots on the balls of my feet after short runs (3 miles at the most).  I'm wondering if it's the shoes (Brooks Glycerin 6, size 7.5) could be too big or maybe i need different socks (balega).  I purchased them at a local running store and got sized and my gait analyzed.  Do I just need to break in the shoes a little more?

Does anyone have suggestions on what other kinds of socks to try?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Stacey

Traxee user bmoore About your sock question...I'm curious...are you training on the road, a track or a treadmill? My initial reaction to this is to get yourself a sock that is really padded in the "Fat Pad" area. I really like Thor-Lo, like a #3 if you can. I have also heard that the Bridgedale DIVA has a lot of padding in the forefoot. You can find them on Bridgedaleusa.com. I would definitely try doing a run in different socks before changing shoes since you probably spent over $100 on them. If the problem keeps up, it's probably the fit of the shoe. It sounds like you went to a good running store and this could be the test...good shops will usually help you analyze the problem and even change out the shoes for you. Let me know what happens.

Traxee user moofieruns Oh, you're kidding? That's pretty cool. Why don't you email me and give me whatever info I need to get you credit...then when I sign up, you'll be $100 ahead. How much money have you gotten pleged so far? My e-mail is moofieruns@gmail.com.

Traxee user ontherun08 I got a mailer too and decided to join. I believe there is still time to join and if you give me as a referral I will get $100 towards my fundraising. I don't know anyone else that is training with this group. This Saturday is only the third week of training. This program raises money for AIDS Project LA. Participants are required to raise $2400 by May 9th. Once the goal is met, airfare, hotel stay and marathon reg. is paid for.

Traxee user moofieruns Ooooh! Are you training with a group for that Marathon? I received a postcard from them and I was thinking about training for that race as well? Did you go to the orientation session? Are you training with people you already know or did you just choose a group to join? I have been running for a while and I think there still might be an opportunity to join one of the groups down here. Tell me more!

Traxee user ontherun08 The shoes did feel good when I purchased them. I got no impression that they would give me blisters or any other kinds of problems. I usually have a hard time finding regular everyday shoes too. I'll see how this week goes and if I'm still having troubles, I'll go back to the store I purchased them from. Thanks for the comments and help. I'll also try the vaseline trick

Traxee user Roadrunner When I was shopping around, I was told that running shoes should feel good the day you buy them, you shouldn't have to break them in. Anyone else out there agree...disagree?

Traxee user Roadrunner Hi there...I'm just starting out so I've been doing some gear research myself. I'm sure you talked to the sales person about all the different brands of socks and their benefits...I haven't tried that many to recommend. But I did read if you are wearing the right socks and are still getting blisters, applying Vaseline on the sensitive areas can help. If that doesn't work, it probably is your shoes. Socks are cheaper so I would start there. Good luck!
