Serious pain

Do any of you have problems with your IT Band? I'm training for the SF Marathon and I'm having some serious IT Band issues. I've seen an orthopedist and gone to physical therapy for four weeks. I still can't run/walk for more than 3 miles at a time. I'm stretching, icing, doing strength exercises and foam rolling like there's no tomorrow. Anybody have any more suggests on what to do? I'm also wearing one of those IT Band straps while I run.

Traxee user Betty While it is common to run through some injuries or discomforts...I have to agree with B., rest is imperative, especially when nothing else seems to be working. You could permanently damage your body if you push push push all of the time. And shoes shoes shoes...damn that keeps coming up, but it is so true. Rest and shop...doesn't sound too bad! ;-)

Traxee user bmoore I'm afraid I do have a suggestion for you, but you're not going to like it. Caveat: I am not a doctor or medical professional of any sort. What I know I know from personal experience and research. This pain/injury to your I-band was likely being caused by a couple of things: your shoes are worn down in the midsoles, you increased mileage too fast, you're running too many miles/week, or finally, the shoes you're wearing are not providing enough cushioning. In any case, I suspect that you are a rigid foot runner because you mentioned before that you were having problems with blisters on the bottom pads of your feet, right? I would advise that you stop running for several weeks. (I told you that you wouldn't want to hear this). While you rest, you need to continue your icing and other aspects of your medically advised regimen for healing. How long should you rest? Two or more weeks. And before you go back to training, you should probably look for a new pair of shoes that is going to provide you with more cushioning and flexibility in the midsole. Take it from me, sometimes, there is no other way but rest. Anyone else want to weigh in?
