Road Race Etiquette

Hi gals!! New here and not much of a writer, but found these Race etiquette tips this morning and wanted to share.

Pay for Your Spot:

“Banditting” is the term used for peoples who crash a race by not paying for their spot. Any fees associated with a race are either for hosting the event and or for a sponsored charity. Be kind to organizers, volunteers and your fellow runners; pay for your spot!

Line Up Properly:

Faster runners should be first in line with others following in pace-time succession. This avoids the clustering affect often caused by trying to get around slower runners; much like traffic ‘stay in your lane.’

Don’t Jingle:

Keep change and keys somewhere other than your pockets as the jingling can be very annoying to other runners.

Don’t Take Up the Whole Road:

Try to keep running in groups at two abreast.

Do Show Appreciation to Volunteers and Supporters:

Show appreciation to those who are volunteering their time to help make your run as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Don’t forget to give a nod or wave to all those out supporting YOU, the race, they are there cheering you on.

Be Careful at Water Stations:

Water stations can be crowded, try to avoid any unnecessary injury or congestion by checking your surroundings when slowing down and stopping for a drink.

Keep Moving at The Finish Line:

Move past the finish line until it is safe to come to a stop or veer off the path as there will be runners behind you.

Don’t Be a Glutton:

If your race even is providing a spread of food and drinks at the finish be sure to only take your fair share; this isn’t the Red Cross line people!

See you at the finish line!!

Traxee user bmoore Oh man, that lining up thing is sooo important. I always feel bad when I'm trying to get around people, especially at the beginning of a race. A lot of times runners who are friends are chatting or whatever and are oblivious. Great post, great reminders...welcome to our community!
