Given the rather rough winter weather being experienced all over the globe right now, chances are that you’re dealing with having to workout in snowy or icy conditions.
Many of us head for the “dreadmill” the gym, or worse – cut out our workouts altogether when the going gets rough outside. Nonetheless, winter running can offer some of the most rewarding (and beautiful) experiences ever,
A good friend of mine, a triathlete who also happens to live in Minnesota (brrrr…), recently recommended removable spikes for runners living in less friendly climes. She swears by them, so I started doing a little research and found out that removable spikes for your running shoes are not only effective in offering stability and traction in winter weather, but also won’t break the bank.
Here are a few of the options I found:
Yaktrax
Yaktrax have a unique, spikeless, patented coil design, unlike other products on the market. According to the company’s website, the Yaktrax Pro instantly gives runners better traction, confidence and safety on packed snow or ice. They claim that you can move about naturally with the same solid grip that you are accustomed to on dry surfaces. “Walk or run as you normally would and experience stability on ice and snow like you have never felt before.” $30, but I hear Costco may have them for a lot less.
Due North
Due North makes an easy to slip on traction aid that you can buy in sizes to fit most running shoes. This product is ideal for anyone who walks, runs or works outdoors, preventing slips and falls on snow and ice. The bi-directional tread provides added traction and lateral grip. These spikes hug your shoes so there’s no straps or buckles to deal with. $22.00 at Gander Mountain Online.
Get A Grip Ice Traction Slip-Ons
These slip-on spikes have 1/8” carbide spikes that dig in for stability. They come with a couple of extra spikes and a little pouch for storage; and they also come in some fun colors if you’re into that sort of thing. They’re not quite as aggressively designed as the Yaktrax, so if you’re only covering a little frozen stuff and mostly running on street these may be the ticket. For $15.00, they’re worth a try anyway.
Stabilicers Lite Ice Cleats
32North’s cleat product offers slip protection with both heel and forefoot cleats that help you maintain your natural stride when walking or running on snow or ice. You can buy these in a small size, which should fit most women’s running shoes and they fit easily over most shoes and boots. About $30 at Amazon.com.
