Ever since I read that New York Times interview with Shalane Flanagan, I can't get her out of my mind.
This morning, as I slogged through my 4 mile run at my usual 9:20 pace I started thinking; what would it be like to be able to run 26.2 miles in 2:28:40? People, if I am doing my math correctly, this is an average 5:40 pace! I mean, what does it feel like to be able to run that fast? If you are that fit, is it that hard? Does it feel like flying? I have questions.
New York on Sunday was Shalane's first marathon. In her post-race press conference she says that she caught a glimpse of one of her early splits - a 5:47 and she "felt like she was jogging." Amazing!" She started training in August for this thing - so she actually did a typical 12 week training program with her longest pre-race run being about 20 miles.
I would love to meet this woman one day. Since I first laced up my shoes I have known that I am not built for speed. I just don't have the fast genes. Yet, I am so inspired by these women who slam. I am in awe of Shalane and all elite women runners who are doing what women weren't even allowed to do 40 years ago. I can't wait to see her race again; it's just so inspiring.
Oh, and Shalane, LOVE that nail color on you baby!
Wow! That was an amazing push at the finish! It would be so awesome to run New York one day. I think the most amazing thong would be crossing the bridge onto the city. I used to run on the Upper East Side when I traveled to New York regularly for work. Such a fantastic experience! You should definitely go for it. Ha! That finish line is a powerful motivator!
WOW that pace for that distance is INCREDIBLE!!!! I wish I could do that. I'm sure anyone could if you had the right coach and right training. I too am not a speed person. At least not for a looong distance. I am more of a distance runner. However, at my 10k i just ran; my pace as I crossed the finishline was about 5:50....lol and thats only b/c I knew the finishline was about a 1/4mile away, so i had to pick up the pace....That 10k was extremely challenging...after i got over one hill...bam, there was another...the course was mostly hills and deep sand...I did make up time on the down hill :-)....but my goal for that race next year...is to beat my time for this past one...1:00:24...now that i know what to expect, i know what and how to train for it. maybe maybe one day I will be able to run NY...that is a goal of mine..just to run it and FINISH it...in about 4hrs....even if i don't run it in 4, just to finish it would be a fete in itself. I look up to Flanagan, she is truly amazing...I just cant believe that she thought 5:47 was a jog....lol thats a sprint for me. shes amazing!!!!!!
