Question about fueling during long run

I've been increasing my mileage and am up to 18 miles.  I've experimented with energy gels, gel shots and gatordade.  My problem with the energy gels and shots is that I have to make a pit stop!  Two weeks ago, when I ran 16 miles, I began using the energy shots about an hour into the run and then every 25-45 minutes after that.  About mile 14 I started noticing the need to make a pit stop.  By the time I got to mile 16, it was unbearable.  I couldn't have gone further than 16 if I had wanted to.  I did 18 this weekend, but had to split my run (12 miles in am, and 6 miles in pm).  I plan to do 20 in two weeks and I don't want to have to cut it short due to nature calling.  I wonder if I could just fuel with gatorade.  Would this give me the carbs and energy I would need to make it all the way?  My stomach doesn't react to gatorade the way it does the gels and shots.  Would love any advice!!

Traxee user bmoore Hi tross! OK - so here's the scoop on the gels, beans, guus, shots, et al. Some people just can't take 'em. Of course, you won't see this posted on the manufacturer's websites, but it is not at all unusual for a runner to have trouble with these high carb, high sugar concoctions. In fact - there are a lot of ultra-marathoners that absolutely refuse to down the things and prefer more natural solutions to the fueling challenge. It's a really good thing that you are experimenting in the relative safety of known bathroom stops. You definitely can keep hydrated with Gatorade, however, if you are going to be doing ultra high distances, I recommend that you try a natural solution - that is, making your own energy food. There are a TON of recipes for gels. Here are a couple of good links for you to check out, and I will publish a few more later today: http://bit.ly/a785HN , http://bit.ly/cQvd4h , http://bit.ly/dknyxG. It just may be that your body is reacting to one of the preservatives found in these gels and the homemade version is a much better option for you...and an added benefit...MUCH cheaper!

Traxee user Mommyruns3 I'm interested in this as well! Sometimes I'm barely a mile in before I need to make a pit stop. It's pretty frustrating! Especially when you just want to KEEP GOING, lol!

Traxee user bmoore Hey tross! I have my own opinion about this, but I am going to post this over on our Facebook page and see what the community has to say...
